Navigating life as an expat can be difficult, as the areas that we grow up in typically reflect a lot about ourselves and our culture. As you adjust to living abroad, you will find that homesickness and culture shock have the ability to draw unwanted negativity into your life.
These side effects of relocation are common, but most people see them as aspects of moving that you simply have to deal with. But what if you don’t have to just grin and bear it?
Embracing Life as an Expat Woman
How Do You Overcome the Challenges?
Take Time to Connect With Yourself
Self-love is one of life’s greatest gifts. Despite a big change in the country that you live in, there is one constant that is for certain despite a move – yourself! Taking time to love yourself and treat yourself during times of homesickness can help to improve your mental status and your outlook on life.
Take time for yourself in your new location. Consider going out to a restaurant on your own or getting a coffee. You might even want to go and get your nails done or schedule a massage! Other ideas for spending time with yourself can be found here.
Seek Out a Different Mindset
Mindset is the sum of our experience. As humans, we interact with our surroundings every day and take in our experiences. Our reactions to these experiences can be negative or positive, but they are not stable. You’ve likely had an experience in your life that your initial impression of was negative, but upon further reflection, the experience wasn’t actually so bad.
Finding these opportunities to swap your mindset for a more positive outlook is the key to overcoming challenges, but it’s understandably difficult to do so on your own. Finding a mindset coach who specializes in expats and big moves can be helpful in your pursuit of changing your mindset.
